The suicide rate for middle-aged white men, 45-64 years old, rose to the highest rate compared to any other demographic in 2019 (CDC, 2020). Despite the high incidence of suicide in men, remarkably little is known about its contributing factors (Bilsker & White, 2011). The current study hypothesized that conformity to the masculine gender norms of self-reliance, emotional control, and violence would mediate the relationship between affect intensity and suicide. Analyses were conducted on data from a sample of 109 middle-aged men, ages 45-64 years, collected online from Amazon’s Mechanical Turk. Participants completed self-report measures of affect intensity, conformity to masculine gender norms, and suicidality. Although there was a significant and positive relationship between affect intensity and suicidality, conformity to emotional control, violence, and self-reliance did not significantly mediate the relationship between affect intensity and suicidality. However, there was a significant positive association between conformity to self-reliance and suicidality. In addition, exploratory analyses indicated that conformity to power over women significantly mediated the relationship between affect intensity and suicidality. The findings from this study indicate that middle-aged men with higher affect intensity are at higher risk for suicide. In addition, results suggest that middle aged men who conform to the masculine gender norms of self-reliance and power over women are at higher risk for suicide.
