Abstract
Psychological research is an important tool to expand our understanding of the characteristics and development of wisdom (Baltes & Smith, 2008). The present study compared parent and adolescent reports of adolescent wisdom, as well as the relationship between adolescent wisdom and psychological wellbeing. Dyads of parents and their adolescent children (n= 54) participated in this study. Each member of the dyad provided qualitative responses describing their definition of wisdom, situations in which the teen demonstrated wise action, and reasons for the action being considered wise. Overall, parent and adolescents had similar responses; however, adolescents were more likely to identify cognitive components of wisdom in their definition, whereas parents described learning from experience. Both parents and their adolescent children identified dangerous situations, often involving drugs or alcohol, as the situation most often prompting wise action. In contrast to previous studies, both parents and their adolescent children reported honesty and sense of responsibility as a frequent reason for action being considered wise. Parents and adolescents also each rated the teen on total wisdom and three wisdom subscales. Results indicated differences in parent and adolescent reports on one subscale: adolescent intelligence. Parents perceived their adolescent child as more intelligent than the adolescents perceived themselves. Both parent and adolescent total wisdom scores were associated with increased adolescent psychological wellbeing. Recommendations for future research are to determine the aspects of responsibility that are most often associated with wise action and how these characteristics can be instilled and promoted in adolescence.
